Fisher 30: An “easy to trailer” boat?
Storing a seven-ton boat in Hamburg’s historic tidal harbor was no small feat for us. With no crane available, an old, repurposed farm trailer became the unlikely hero of this operation. From battling marine growth to overcoming trailer malfunctions, this story highlights the challenges and ingenuity behind securing a vessel for winter in a makeshift tent.

FAQ's
Why did I decide to refit this specific boat?
This boat was built in an era when fiberglass hulls were thick and overbuilt, making it a great candidate for a refit. Despite its solid structure, decades of wear and aging systems meant it needed a full overhaul to be safe and seaworthy again. Instead of buying a newer boat, I chose to restore and upgrade this classic yacht to preserve its character while integrating modern improvements. What drew me to this boat, beyond its solid construction, was its unique aesthetic – a design that stands out from modern production boats. Its lines and proportions reflect an era when craftsmanship mattered, and its nod to traditional fishing boats gives it a distinctive, almost timeless appeal. This blend of classic form and functional simplicity makes it more than just a sailboat – it’s a piece of maritime history worth preserving.
How did I deal with the boat’s osmosis problem
Fortunately, I haven’t found any significant signs of osmosis on my boat so far (knock on wood). Since this is a common issue with old fiberglass hulls, I know it’s something to watch out for. However, I haven’t had to deal with it myself yet and don’t have firsthand experience with osmosis treatment. So far, I haven’t needed to research or apply any specific repair methods – but if the issue ever arises, you can be sure I’ll document the entire process here on the blog!
What advice would I give to someone restoring an old fiberglass sailboat?
- Take your time with planning – Rushing leads to costly mistakes.
- Expect the unexpected – There will always be surprises when working on a 50-year-old boat.
- Don’t cheap out on key components – Rigging, hull repairs, and electrical work need to be done right.
- Enjoy the process – It’s as much about the journey as it is about the final result!
